Natural gloss Wessiny semi-cured gel nail strips in a range of sizes for an at-home manicure

How to Choose the Right Gel Nail Strip Size

Choosing the right gel nail strip size is one of the simplest ways to make an at-home manicure look neater and stay comfortable. Wessiny sets include 20 strips in multiple sizes, so you can match each natural nail rather than forcing one size to work everywhere.

The simple rule: choose slightly smaller when you are between sizes

Hold a strip over the nail before peeling it from the backing. The best fit follows the width of your nail bed while staying just inside the cuticle and side edges. If two sizes both look possible, choose the slightly smaller strip. A strip that reaches onto skin or the cuticle is more likely to lift at the edges.

How to size all ten nails before you start

  1. Lay the strip sheet beside your hand before any prep or peeling.
  2. Hold different strips over each nail and choose the closest fit.
  3. Set aside your ten chosen strips in order, from thumb to little finger.
  4. Check that each strip sits on the nail plate, not on the skin at the sides or cuticle.

Doing the full fit check first makes the application smoother and means you are not deciding sizes while the rest of your manicure is already underway.

What does a good fit look like?

  • At the cuticle: leave a small gap instead of placing the strip directly onto the cuticle.
  • At the sidewalls: the strip should sit within the natural nail edges without overlapping the skin.
  • At the tip: the strip can extend past your natural nail before you file the excess away.

What if a strip looks too wide?

Do not use a strip that touches skin just to cover every millimeter of the nail. Move down one size and center it carefully. The goal is a clean seal on the natural nail, rather than a strip that wraps over the sidewall. Press the edges firmly with the wooden stick before curing.

What if a strip looks a little narrow?

First, compare the next size up. If that one would touch the skin, use the smaller strip centered on the nail. A neat, slightly inset fit is generally preferable to an oversized strip that overlaps the skin. Avoid pulling or reshaping a strip aggressively, as it can distort the design and placement.

Size and prep work together

Correct sizing works best on clean, dry, oil-free nails. Once you have chosen the size, press from the cuticle area toward the tip, smooth out air pockets, file the excess downward, and cure under a UV/LED lamp. These details help each strip sit flat and look polished.
